International Women's Day - 8 March 2012
8 March 2012 marks 101 years since International Women's Day was first celebrated. IWD is a global event which draws attention to both the remarkable accomplishments of women and the discrimination and violence against women that still continues. This year’s theme is Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures and events will be held around Australia during this week.
Despite the progress that has been made towards gender equality in the last 101 years, there is still no place in the world where women enjoy rights and opportunities that are equal to men. On IWD we renew our commitment to the ongoing work towards women's equal participation in economic and political decision-making. We again commit to challenging the scandalous extent of violence against women that continues despite ongoing efforts of individuals, governments and the international community.
