Message from the Steering Committee

Would you like to broaden your Jewish social network in Canberra?

Are you interested in working for the improvement of women’s lives, on a local, national and international level?

We provide social, educational and cultural functions primarily for the women in the Canberra Jewish community and sometimes for the wider Jewish community and friends. We work for Israeli, Jewish and non-Jewish causes, both through fundraising and as the voice of Jewish women.

National Council of Jewish Women of Australia's Canberra Section is the only Jewish women's organisation under the auspices of the ACT Jewish Community. We were formed in 1955. Our events are held both at the community's National Jewish Memorial Centre and in private homes. The upstairs auditorium at the Centre is named after the founder of NCJWA Dr. Fanny Reading in recognition of the important funding support provided by NCJWA nationally when the Centre was built in 1971.

We reach out to all Jewish women in Canberra, and are keen to encourage younger Jewish women to join us. Non-members and prospective members are always welcome at our functions. We hope that you will consider joining, because your membership helps us to fund our projects. Our projects include the Haifa Rape Crisis Centre; the Ilan Foundation for Handicapped Children in Israel and the Haifa University scholarships to assist women of Ethiopian descent with academic counselling, private tutoring, special courses, transportation costs, accommodation, books, as well as equipment and ancillary expenses incurred outside their tuition fees.We also donate to local charities.Last year we made donations from funds we had collected at events to Breast Cancer Network Australia, ACT women's refuge and the ACT Jewish Community.

The Steering Committee

Steering Committee

Canberra Section operates as a Steering Commitee of peers. Although we don't have official positions some of us have taken on roles on a regular basis. We acknowledge Janet for her work with our financial accounts and event managing, Sylvia for her liason and dissemination role between NCJWA and the section, Yvette for taking and producing minutes from our meetings, Anita for her representational role with Council Executive, Fiona for reaching out to our membership with support and congratulations and Jo for maintaing our webpage.

What's Happening?

Our functions are advertised through the ACT Jewish Community’s monthly newsletter Hamerkaz and the weekly email newsletter Grapevine, both of which are sent to members. Please contact us if you would like to be added to the mailing list.

Recent Events

Environment Membership Garden Party

Our first function for 2015 was an environment/membership morning tea on 15 February at the home of Adele Rosalky, with guest speaker Yaeli Liebowitz on Our Environment: everything is not awesome, but it is connected. Yaeli is a former co-convenor of the Canberra Section with experience in the field and a senior public servant who recently led a major departmental pollution emergency program.

Mishloach Manot Team

As our community service this year, Canberra Section participated in the organisation, packing and delivery of 26 Mishloach Manot, with intended recipients being the elderly, the sick and newer families to our community. The project was carried out in close association with the ACT Jewish Community. Our gift bags contained a variety of items, wine, biscuits, different kinds of sweets and of course, many Hamantashen, traditional and more modern flavour interpretations. Our enthusiastic volunteers happily arranged the food items in colourful gift bags.

Rozen Video Evening

We were honoured to host an event at the ACT Jewish at which Richard Rozen presented a video of a play about his childhood hiding from the Germans. His story is one of amazing fortitude. It was followed by an interesting Q&A. We are always delighted to host both Richard and our dear friend Rysia.
